DS Colors... worth it?

Mon Feb 18, 2008, 8:04 PM
Edit: W..Woah, thank you so much :iconfuugakun: !! I don't know what I did to deserve it, but I'll definitely draw you something in return for the sub.. Again, thank you!! I feel incredibly honored.

Sorry for the random entry, but I'd like some opinions, and the sooner the better...

So I've been thinking about getting a DS Lite, mainly just for the Colors program (if I get games, then my productivity level will go from 5% to something that defies the laws of nature). I've heard good things about Colors, and I'm aware that it's very limited-- no undo, no layers, small resolution-- but I'm ok with that; it's pretty much the same as Pchat for me. It has eyedrop tool, color wheel, and pressure sensitivity, and that's all I need.

What I really like about it is... the idea of a portable digital sketchbook. Sometimes just sketching isn't enough, and I want to pull out my laptop and just paint something I see around me, or some idea that hits me on the spot (or if I want to paint during class, heh heh). But a laptop isn't portable enough for that kind of thing... The DS Colors is small and simple but that's where it appeals to me. And then if I want to blow it up big, I can just do so on Photoshop. No big difference to how I use my webcam to "scan" in 480 x 640 pixel wide 72 dpi sketches to paint these days... Luckily I'm not the type of person who needs a good clean sketch too work (I'm too ADD for that).
All in all, DS could allow me to doodle. With digital paint. On the go. Sounds good! ...Worth the money? Hmm.

So... any opinions about that? And... Though I've played a little bit with some other peoples DSs, none of them had Colors before, so I don't know firsthand how it feels like. ...Anyone who actually did it before have anything to say about their drawing experience?

I think in total it'd cost me about 150 to 200 dollars. I currently have almost enough money saved up for that from some little jobs I did, but before I do anything rash I'd just like to know from others if they think it'd be worth it or not. (I am a complete newbie to handheld game consoles, the only portable one I own is was a secondhand gift, a Pocket Nintendo Gameboy, with Pokemon Red in all its black and white glory from my elementary school days. I never really cared to get another one, until now).

Though with that money... I am also debating on buying a program for me to screencast my painting progress with (making video tutorial with speech). Even though it's not something that I'd really benefit from (other than good karma maybe? haha), I like attempting to help my friends or some people who're interested, so... that's another option I'm considering at the moment...

Thanks!

Also! Something I've really taken a shining and I think you should too ..
You know how often you save amazing images, a crapload of them, but you never really go through your folders and look at them? I've finally put them to good use by setting them as my screensaver, now when I draw or do other stuff I can just look up and enjoy the images when I feel like I'm in a rut... Or to distract myself... or when I just want to get inspired. (Though this can border dangerously on being counterproductive, so watch yourself)

Woah that sounds cool
I think of all the systems, you might like the DS and its games the most so if it has this awesome program for it too (which I've never seen before *__*; ) then I think its only a bonus for you! XD Its backwards compatible too, so you can buy a whole bunch of cheap game boy advance games if you don't want to buy DS games~ (And they come in pink~ *w* yaay~)
If you have that disposable incomke, I think the whole idea sounds really awesome~ *__*

Kanoe!! Hey how have you been? (I don't think we ever Really chatted before on ms or aim. We must change that. :O )
And yeah! I've always been a distant fan of the DS, I watch all my friends play it, and they're always doing really awkward and hilarious stuff with it-- looks so bomb. Hmmm
I'm just worried that if I get a DS, all my time will be sucked away! It's TOO awesome.
But yeah-- I don't have a disposable income, but if it's worth it, then I'm willing to use my meager savings to get it. Looks like a good investment for improving in skills, actually, so the more I think about it the more eager I am to get my hands on it... lol :O I just hope it's close enough to what I expect it to be!
Lol sorry for rambling on! X(
Hope life's treating you well. See you in May-!!
thats the only reason i want a DS
its a very pretty fine software, i own a DS, to play, but when i found colors! and give it a try i found that its was marvelous, i think there is a lot of reasons to buy a DS

and one its the homebrew soft, and of course colors!

please make me note if i write something wrong
YES to DS. I got a DS solely for the sake of Colors and I totally recommend it. I'm really lazy, but I love CGing crap so it works out. And it really does help out when you're waiting in line.. not to mention, if you don't mind, downloading games will also be... fun 'cause you get to pass time without needing a functioning brain. 8D

I can't say for sure about how well it works, because I just bought a flash cart for my DS to use it. But you are right it would set you back about $200 to get a DS and everything you need.

Another thing to consider is that you can post up the videos of what you have done on Colors which would be another way of people seeing how you work.

- Of course the DS has some awesome games on it as well, which I think makes it well worth the buy, but you said you really just want colors.
That program seems pretty awesome, though I think it would be a bit awkward working with such a small area. A DS lite screen is probably no bigger than a playing card, so think about that. If you do happen to buy a DS I wouldn't recommend just for that program because there are other games that are also worth the cash =/

Are you going to get an R4 card or DS Fire card with it? Well, I don't think you can actually buy Colours anyway.

I'd say it's worth it lol. I felt like pchatting last night but I couldn't be bothered getting out of bed so I just turned on my DS and voila. It's VERY handy XD The controls are not terribly awkward either. The only problem I have with Colours is the size of the canvas coz I like to draw big. I hear they're still developing Colours so in the future you might be able to draw with others on Wi-Fi.

Even if you get bored of Colours, as long as you have an R4 you can just download Phoenix Wright to occupy yourself XD

..:) you say 'yeah' at the end of your questions yeah?
Haha yeah, thanks!
I agree, DS is really appealing... I like how innovative it is, PSP just seems boring in comparison :O
