I have always been a fan of these speed paint type style images of scenery/places. I have never been able to pull them off myself but I must say that you seem to be doing a pretty good job.

- All three of these that you just posted have back lighting of some sort w/ really dark areas in the foreground which seems to be an effect technique for framing/composition.

And yes, separation of fore, middle, and background is one of those standard things we like to keep in mind, though it applies to more than just bg painting
