I really should not have done this; got homework to do! It started out as something I was supposed to finish in an hour, but ended up spending about from 2.5 hours on instead. Would have been longer if I didnt have the fish-dude drawn already
The flying eel came from a game design student who asked me for some concept art ideas earlier on this year; the story is really interesting, about people who live in flying oldish-ships (like Treasure Planet meets Oregon Trail, which I looked at for inspiration today-- TP, I mean) and these travelers would have to find food and places to rest and fight off colossal oceanic creatures that live in the sky. As for the rest of the earth, someone had pissed off some higher being and so everyone lives in floating Noah's Arks now (no, it's not really like that in his story.) I found my eel yesterday again and decided to do something with it today!
Now, time to do my painting homework and sleep even less!

wow, i really love how the fish/eel came out, and the lighting and coloring on it esp grabbed my attention. plus the little kid on it is awesome *_* i wish you didnt have hw so you can spend more time on this xDD i'd like to see more detail on the ship but this overall composition is really good.

Hahaha let's not jinx it!
Original size? Pretty small actually. 1665 pixels wide; I didn't have the original eel file, I just found a jpeg of it in my old stuffs, and worked on that. Because this is a speedpaint and not a full out illustration to be printed or what not, and also because the kid isn't exactly the focal point, I didn't find it necessary (nor possible) to work out all his facial feature. At some point I ended up using 1 pixel brushes on him lol
Yeah, the cloud used to be more rainbow, and whatever trace of yellow in there is now gone ;; Thanks for pointing it out, I forgot to look at it after uploading it here.
I'm not exactly sure why it is, but Mac finds it necessary to have its own separate color mode, which looks nice; but what I export from Photoshop is noticeably desaturated compared to it in the working space. I'm usually okay with it though, and sometimes the desaturation works to my advantage, but like for this instance it backfired and I forgot about the change. I'll go back and over-saturate it so that when I save it as JPG it will hopefully be at the correct saturation... but that is kind of risky, as I don't even know what the true color is anymore, so ...
...huh?
Ahh //D I love your paintery style~ especially the Eel~
I really like how you mixed/blended the soft pinkish/purple colours with the blue for the clouds too~

I love the concept
I like the design of the eelxfish!
I wish I could see hints of other colours, but I'm overly fond of seeing a lot of colours in one piece.
i really enjoy the looses style, always reminds me of a loose acrylic painting, or maybe just something with a bit of van gohs over-love for impasto.
what size is this normally? just wondered because of the details on the kid's face.
