I really should not have done this; got homework to do! It started out as something I was supposed to finish in an hour, but ended up spending about from 2.5 hours on instead. Would have been longer if I didnt have the fish-dude drawn already

The flying eel came from a game design student who asked me for some concept art ideas earlier on this year; the story is really interesting, about people who live in flying oldish-ships (like Treasure Planet meets Oregon Trail, which I looked at for inspiration today-- TP, I mean) and these travelers would have to find food and places to rest and fight off colossal oceanic creatures that live in the sky. As for the rest of the earth, someone had pissed off some higher being and so everyone lives in floating Noah's Arks now (no, it's not really like that in his story.) I found my eel yesterday again and decided to do something with it today!

Now, time to do my painting homework and sleep even less!

Nice painting. This reminds me of Spelljammer (a tabletop RPG where sailing ships can fly into space) and Waterworld (the film with the guy with gills).

I love the idea of a world where the native people can capture and train flying fish. Seeing this picture makes me wonder if the guy on the fish is a curious nomadic tribesman friendly towards the ship, or if he has used the cloud cover to sneak into a position where he and others can leap onboard, ambush the crew of the ship and steal their stuff.

I do agree with a couple of the comments about the fish rider. If he leaned back like that, he might get ripped loose from the saddle and end up on the spiked collar behind him. I think that a pose like a motor-bike rider or horse rider might seem a bit more realistic. I think the direction of his hair also looks a bit odd. I would expect the fish to go forward and the wind to blow his hair backwards. But it seems more like it is going upwards. However, that doesn't spoil what is a great picture.

I'm going to submit it to dA's Spelljammer group, as I think the members will love this.

I like how you drew the kid. It looks like he can barely hold on. It adds a nice subtle comedic tone.

if you like that flying eel design you can check out Panzer Dragoon Orta for xbox. there is a character that uses some kind of animal to fly around on, and it looks like an eel
